What is this medication?

Amlodipine is a medication is often used for systemic hypertension in both cats and dogs. It works by blocking calcium channels in different types of muscles which result in a reduction of blood pressure.

Why was this medication prescribed to my pet?

It is commonly prescribed for pets with high blood pressure.

Usually available as tablets.

What side effects are there?

  • Weakness

  • Gingival hyperplasia

  • Peripheral oedema 

  • Low heart rate

  • Reduced appetite

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

  • Low blood pressure

When should this medication be used very carefully?

  • Patients with a history of hypersensitivity

  • Liver disease 

What monitoring is required?

Your veterinarian will usually monitor blood pressure regularly. 

Typically blood pressure reassessed every 1-3 weeks initially. 

Storage and safety

Store tablets at room temperature and keep them out of reach of pets.
Store amlodipine tablets at 20°C to 25°C
