What is this medication?

Levothyroxine is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to replace missing thyroid hormone in the body. This medication is typically used for hypothyroidism in dogs.

Why was this medication prescribed to my pet?

Levothyroixine is prescribed when a diagnosis of hypothyroidism is made. This is a disease where typically occurs in middle aged- older dogs where they often present with a myriad of signs such as lethargy, skin/hair issues, cardiovascular abnormalities and others.

What forms are available?

Usually available as tablets.

Forms available:

·       Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) 50mcg Tablet

·       Eltroxin (Levothyroxine) 100mcg Tablet

·       Dechra Thyforon® Tablets for Dogs (400mcg)

What side effects are there?

·       Increased thirst

·       Increased urination

·       Decreased appetite or anorexia

·       Diarrhea

·       Skin issues

·       Long term high dosese can lead to signs of hyperthyroidism such as increased drinking/urination, appetite, weight loss, panting

When should this medication be used very carefully?

·       Pets with concurrent cardiovascular disease

·       Pets with concurrent adrenal disease

What monitoring is required?

Pets usually require periodic blood testing to ensure appropriate clinical response and thyroid levels.

Storage and safety

Store tablets at room temperature in a dry, dark place, typically between 20°C-25°C. Please check storage and safety instructions as it may differ between brands.
