What is this medication?

Baytril is a broad‑spectrum antibiotic from a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones. They are effective against a variety of gram negative and positive pathogens, however ineffective against anaerobes. It works by interfering with bacterial DNA, preventing bacteria from multiplying and allowing the body to clear the infection.

Why was this medication prescribed to my pet?

It is commonly prescribed for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections. 

What forms are available?

Baytril is usually available as tablets. Injectable forms may be used in the clinic.

What side effects are there?

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Reduced appetite

  • Lethargy

  • Ocular toxicities in cats

  • Rare side effects include- liver damage, ataxia, seizures

When should this medication be used very carefully?

  • Young growing animals because high doses may affect developing joints

  • Pets with a history of hypersensitivity 

  • Pets with kidney disease

What monitoring is required?

Your veterinarian may reassess your pet if symptoms are not improving after a few days of treatment.

Storage and safety

Store tablets at room temperature and keep them securely out of reach of pets and children.
Store in air tight containers below 25°C
