What is this medication?

Phenylpropanolamine stimulates adrenergic and beta receptors which increase urethral sphincter tone which in turn improves control over urine flow from the bladder.

Why was this medication prescribed to my pet?

It is commonly used to treat urinary incontinence, especially in dogs with urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI).

What forms are available?

Available usually in liquid formulations.

Forms available:

• Vetoquinol Propalin Syrup

What side effects are there?

• Lethargy

• Vomiting 

• Diarrhoea

• Weight loss 

• Hypertension 

• Increased heart rate

• Proteinuria 

• Elevated ALT/ALP

When should this medication be used very carefully?

• Pets with a history of hypersensitivity 

• Pets with glaucoma 

• Pets with endocrine disorders 

• Pets with heart disease, liver disease

• Pets with high blood pressure

What monitoring is required?

Your veterinarian may reassess your pet’s response to treatment periodically. Always ensure water is available for your pet.

Storage and safety

Store medication between 20°C-25°C and keep it out of reach of pets. Typically discarded 3 months after first use.
