What is Onsior?
Onsior (robenacoxib) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in veterinary medicine for dogs and cats. It is commonly used for post operative pain and musculoskeletal pain such as osteoarthritis.
Onsior works by selectively inhibiting COX-2 enzymes, which are responsible for producing inflammatory chemicals this in turn results in less side effects compared to traditional NSAIDs.
Why was Onsior prescribed to my pet?
Onsior is commonly prescribed for:
• Post-operative pain and inflammation
• Acute pain management
• Chronic musculoskeletal pain
What forms are available?
Onsior is available in:
• Tablets (for dogs and cats)
• Injectable form (often used peri-operatively)
Tablet strengths vary depending on species and formulation.
What side effects are there?
Most pets tolerate Onsior well. However, side effects can occur. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Lethargy
• Inappetence
• Changes in drinking and/or urination
• Increased liver enzymes
When should this medication be used very carefully?
Onsior should be used with caution in pets that:
• Have a recorded hypersensitivity to it
• Intolerance to other NSAIDs
• History of GI ulcers
• Have pre-existing kidney, liver, or gastrointestinal disease
• Are dehydrated, unwell, or hypotensive
• Are receiving other NSAIDs or corticosteroids
• Are on medications that may affect kidney or liver function
Onsior should NOT be used at the same time as other NSAIDs or steroids.
A washout period is required when switching pain medications.
What monitoring is required for pets on Onsior?
• Short-term use (typical): monitoring may be minimal
• Repeated or higher-risk use:
o Baseline blood tests
o Monitoring kidney and liver values if clinically indicated
o Regular reassessment of pain control and side effects
Prompt reporting of any changes at home is essential for safe use.
Storage and safety
• Store tablets at controlled room temperature of 15°C to 25°C
• Keep medication securely out of reach of pets
• Use only as prescribed for the intended pet
• Refer to the product label for detailed storage instructions
